The Lexington Police Canine Unit in downtown Lexington Ky!
Did you know that downtown Lexington Ky has the oldest police canine unit in the state? Since 1962, the facility has housed police dogs trained to work with local law enforcement officers. Currently the unit has ten dogs, one female and nine males, from two to eight years old. The department works only with German shepherds because they are intelligent and athletic. They are born and bred in Germany and, while trained in Indiana, respond only to commands spoken in German. The dogs in the Lexington Police Canine Unit serve the public by tracking criminals and missing persons, sniffing out drugs and explosives, and by patrol duty. Dogs are considered rookies the first two to three years and serve another five or so until retiring at about eight years of age. Learn more about the Lexington Police Canine Unit here.
The police dog unit is located in the metro area off Old Frankfort Pike. Downtown is definitely not going to the dogs though! More and more people are choosing to make downtown Lexington Ky their home. Home buyers can choose from historic homes, new condos and lofts, as well as townhouses. Residents of downtown can walk to Rupp Arena, the Opera House, Kentucky Theater and the many bars and restaurants that offer a thriving entertainment scene. Homes for sale in downtown Lexington Ky range from $65,000 to over $1 million.
