Leaving Lexington & in the mist of the Roatan, Honduras Real Estate & fun!

A few weeks ago, I left the Lexington real estate market for a few days to travel to the beloved Caribbean.  One of my stops led me to Roatan. This fun little escape is the largest of the six Bay Islands and located in the Caribbean Sea, approximately 30 miles off the North Coast of Honduras. A variety of airlines offer direct flights from the USA to Roatan. Flight time to Roatan is only 2.5 hours from the southern half of the U.S.

It is definitely a great place for vacations, summer resorts or extended living. No matter the price range, Roatan real estate is a bargain in the Caribbean. Last August, the Wall Street Journal named Honduras and particularly Roatan as the #1 of ten contenders for the next “Hot Spot” travel destination of the world. I recently spoke with a friend of mine and told him about the great time I had in Roatan. He is very familiar with the island as he transports exotic animals around the world. He recently went on a trip to Roatan to deliver Sea Lions and Dolphins and he remarked how well the people of Honduras treat their animals.

That love is apparent. During my visit, we were able to visit a school where they train Dolphins and were able to see a couple of them in school. You could tell they have a love, not only for the water of course but for their trainers and the public that come to visit.

The diving on Roatan is incredible! It is one of the world’s top diving spots and is located next to the world’s second largest coral reef.  People come from all over the world, not only for the reasonable diving and dive training prices, but because of the wide array of sea life.

Real Estate prices are still pretty reasonable considering it lies in the heart of the Caribbean Sea. I met with Realtor Erica James of Realty Executives and she has worked the Roatan real estate market for years. She gave me the run down on how affordable the prices are.

Land for .50 acre starts at $42,500 and runs up to $10 million for a prime 31.5 acres spot with 1,500 feet of beach front.

*Homes range from $70,000 for 864 sq ft to $6.5 million for 19,000 sq ft.

*Condos from $99,000 for 1,110 sq. ft. up to $1.3 million for 4,400 sq ft.

One thing is for sure, the people show a great deal of love to the wildlife, the land and the country. Put this beautiful place on your must visit destination list! I know I will be going back here!
