Kentucky Program Offers Educational Assistance To Children with Parents Working in Horse Industry
Here’s one more reason to feel proud about living in Lexington Ky: We have a unique educational program to help children of horse farm employees. There are about 450 horse farms in Central Kentucky, with 150 here in Lexington/Fayette County. Horse industry employees often move around throughout the year and this makes it hard for their children to keep up. Race for Education, a Lexington-based nonprofit started a free after-school program to help these kids in 2011. The program, Starting Gate, helps more than 100 middle school children after school. Children are teamed with college students who tutor them on their reading skills as well as help them with their homework. All of the college students are education majors, and they each receive a $1000 scholarship for working two nights a week during a semester. High school students who wish to pursue a teaching career receive $500 for tutoring the children. The Starting Gate program is funded entirely by private donation and grants. Race for Education was founded in 2002 to provide educational and financial assistance to children whose parents work in the agricultural and equine industries.
While these programs target children who live on major farm operations, perhaps you have thought about raising your children on a small horse farm of your own! If you are living in Lexington Ky, or considering moving here, I will be glad to show you area horse farms for sale. Currently there are over 100 horse farms for sale of 20 acres or more in the Greater Lexington area.
