Flooring, Is it a Do-It-Yourself Home Project?
Is new flooring a do-it-yourself home project? Some projects don’t always need a contractor. Here is the one you can tackle on your own and the one project you shouldn’t!
1. Hardwood or Laminate Flooring –
Do it Yourself? YES!
Laminate sells for $1.50 to $2.50 a square foot. Take a 1,000 square foot home, which translates to a total savings of about $3,000 over professionally installed hardwood floors. When you do it yourself, consider a single board laminate product. Surprisingly many new varieties of sturdy single-board laminate are totally indistinguishable from engineered hardwood and a breeze to install.
Payoff: A $2,000 investment adds at least $5,000 in home value.
2. Carpeting –
Do it Yourself? NO!
Carpet for a decent quality will run from $2.00 to $2.50 a square foot.
Carpet has come down in price in recent years and there are many inexpensive deals out there. Not to mention, it is cheap for carpet pros to install. Many of the major big box stores offer special deals on insulation. The pros will make it look right too! If you try to do it yourself, you will need to purchase special tools and every carpet will stretch different. If you come up short at the end of a room, you are in trouble. Clean, fresh carpet will help your home sell much faster. No questions asked!
